The Cottage at Ducks

A home away from home

In the heart of the idyllic North Devon countryside, under six miles from South Molton, and half an hour from Tiverton and the M5,
Ducks Paddle is off the beaten track, unspoilt and secluded, but still easily accessible.

The pace of life here is as relaxed as you want it to be, situated on an ancient oak-lined lane that was the old route from East Worlington, over Meshaw Moor, to South Molton for centuries. With no near neighbours, Ducks is the most peaceful of settings.

With views of Exmoor and the rolling Devon hills, it is a very special place that works its magic on all who visit.

You can easily while away time in the cottage,  enjoy the sun on the guests' lawn or cozy up in the lounge with a roaring fire if it's cold outside. You can cook up a scrumptious meal in the fabulous kitchen or venture out. Less than a 1/4 of a mile away is Meshaw Moor Nature Reserve, and then pop over to the simply sublime inn, The Grove in Kings Nympton, which is less than ten minutes' drive away.

For the more adventurous there is always something going on.

Our position midway between the North Devon and South Devon coasts makes us an excellent base to explore the stunning Devon countryside. Exmoor, Lynton & Lynmouth to the north, the vibrant City of Exeter and seaside town of Exmouth to the east, the ancient port of Bideford and the North Cornish town of Bude, as well as the super beaches of Woolacombe and Saunton Sands to the west, and the glowering Dartmoor and  the market town of Okehampton to the south.

Because of the sparsely-populated nature of the area all the towns, and several villages and hamlets, host myriad events, such as fairs and festivals. Music, food & drink are always to the fore and showcase local makers, producers and artists as well as those from further afield.

The cottage has been here for over 200 years. It is mentioned in a tithe apportionment from 1838/9 as being owned by John Brown Esq, two houses occupied by Samuel & William Mayne.

We believe the cottage was originally two, semi-detached. One door is evident in the kitchen. Behind the door is a large ledge, now home to a mirror and small wine rack.

Originally thatched, the old roof trusses are visible upstairs in the bedrooms and hallway. It has been re-roofed three times, the last being in the 1990s when the extension was erected.

The cottage is available all year around and can be booked online via  Original Cottages, or contact us directly.

Staying at the cottage

The cottage at Ducks is self catering, has four bedrooms, one en-suite, and sleeps up to seven:

Mallard, a large room with king-sized bed and en-suite shower.
Eider, a cosy double, right in the centre of the cottage.
Ruddy, twin single beds.

The Loft, newly furnished and ready, which has a single bed.

Eider, Ruddy & The Loft share the family bathroom.
The cottage has exclusive use of the old lawn hidden behind the gate in the hedge.

You are welcome to explore further, the paddock above the garden has a fire pit that is for anyone to use.

Fast fibre has come to Ducks via Airband with 150mg in the whole of the cottage.
We want you to feel as if the place is your own and to treat it with consideration. But firstly, it was built to live in, and has seen life, laughter and tears too over its 200 years in existence.

Our hope is that you delight in our stay here, and we wish you a speedy return.

Dogs are welcome. We try to make Ducks as friendly for dogs as we can. We want them to feel at home too.
