Cream first, or jam?
We love good food, and since moving to Devon the places we have been to, both shops and eateries, we have found the quality of food and drink they purvey has been eye-opening.
The locally sourced ingredients have so much to do with this.
Lambs can be seen occasionally running up the lane, frequently a delivery driver will apologise for lateness due to being behind a flock of sheep on the road. They certainly get exercise!
Devon Ruby Red beef, free range chicken, seasonal vegetables and fruit, all going to create delicious food.
Being from farming stock Sharon is always keen to keep it local, or sourced from the garden and polytunnel whenever possible, in her cooking, and knows that the key to good food is two-fold:
Fresh ingredients and well cared for animals.
This goes for eating out too.
We have collated a list of places to eat & drink, to visit, and to explore.
Mostly within a half hour drive from Ducks' although some are so good we have added them as reasons to go further afield.
We want to give first hand recommendations in as many cases as we can, including those from our guests, to provide a comprehensive list with links to websites where possible.
Fabulous food and drink, locally produced.

Sadly, many villages no longer have a watering hole, several houses you encounter were evidently public houses previously, Ducks' was the New Inn in the 1800's.
The large house at Gidley Cross was The Gidley Arms in living memory, the owner of that at one time owned Ducks Paddle too, an early pub chain...
But we have found of the pubs that are open in the area, each is unique, and run by people who are all doing their utmost to provide the best experience they possibly can.
We have yet to try a Sunday roast from any side the Rams Head, having been too busy to take time, so several weekends will need to be pencilled in to remedy that.

It goes without saying we welcome any recommendations, and pointers to places we've yet to discover.
Ceri is doing his bit by logging visits on his Pub Club facebook page, check out all his reviews, and contact him about any you have tried too.
Check opening days and times before making a special trip as they do vary depending on time of year.
BTW, it's jam first, then cream on top, anything else is entirely wrong.

We are lucky to have one of the very finest eating places anywhere in The Grove Inn, just a few miles, and under fifteen minutes away, in Kings Nympton.
Nestled in the heart of Kings Nympton and with chocolate-box perfect looks, check out the thatch detail.
A genuine village pub for the villagers, which just happens to serve the best food too, The Grove is a hub for Kings Nympton, a special 'welcome' on opening the door
(we'll leave you to discover the speciality, which changes regularly) and a relaxed atmosphere, it feels like the perfect local, they are dog friendly too.
Robert's Scotch Egg is rightly famous here-abouts, and the Exmoor Beast Ale, Steak 'n' Kidney Suet Pudding is worth giving 24 hour notice to sample.
Not to mention puddings of the sweet kind, and a bar with a great selection of ales, including guest ones, ciders and wine as well as the most comprehensive whiskey stable you could wish to encounter.
A Kings Nympton Real Ale & Cider Festival hosted by The Grove happens each year in the summer.
We do enthuse about the Grove, but it is a truly great pub!
Hours:
Friday/Saturday 12–3 pm, 5:30–10 pm
Sunday 12–4 pm
Monday Closed
Tuesday 5–10 pm
Wednesday/Thursday 5:30–10 pm
We would absolutely recommend phoning to book a table in advance.

La Petite Bouchée is a super little reservation only restaurant on the square.
Demelza the Citroën HY van marks the venue, that serves food from all over the globe, all local produce, carefully sourced, and expertly prepared by
Chef and owner Anita-Clare Field.
Anita-Clare has been running La Petite in Witheridge for over seven years, having moved here from London in 2017, it has gained countless awards.
Taking part in the fantastic annual Exmoor Food Festivals.
An excellent reason to come to stay here in the month of February.
We had a most excellent 3 course meal on Valentine's Day.
Poached pear with blue cheese & pancetta, moules for Sharon and an Arnold Bennett omelette for myself,
and to finish I enjoyed a pineapple tarte tatin, with coconut ice cream, whilst Sharon took on the cheeseboard, a great house white and a St Austell Tribute took care of liquid refreshment.
We will add the dates and information for next year's festival on here so you can plan it around your stay in North Devon, ideally with us!
It is only bookable in advance, and opens on certain dates, see their website for details.
If you get the opportunity, please patronise them. A small business doing what they love, in a beautiful part of the country.

Other foodie things regularly happen in Witheridge.
The fantastic Miles fish & chip van, which serves cod and chips well worth driving over to get on a Friday, they visit many villages,
Witheridge being the closest to Ducks'
The van is parked in the layby near the school from 4.30 to 7.30.
A wood-fired pizza van visits as well, Wednesdays, from 5 to 6pm.

Just few miles further on from Witheridge is The Mount Pleasant Inn at Nomansland. Under 7 miles and 15 minutes away.
A large menu belays the quality of food on offer, another proper village pub, well stocked bar, the Sandford Orchards Ruby Red is recommended to cider aficionados.
A good vegetarian menu and the lasagne is exceptionally good, Garfield would approve.
Be aware the portions are mightily generous, take account of this if you want three courses.
Dogs are ok on a lead at all times, please inform the staff if you book so they can give you a table with space for them. Children are fine, and don't need to be on a lead.

The square at Chittlehampton, is very picturesque, having many thatched cottages on each side and the Church which towers above.
On the street below is the The Bell Inn. A thriving and vibrant pub, a bar with Sandford Orchard cider, which comes from Crediton, as well as locally brewed ales such as Exmoor and Otter.
A comprehensive menu, and a specials board, mean everyone will find something to please. John May from South Molton provide beef and gammon steaks, and chicken, there is a very good vegetarian menu, needless to add that all food is prepared in the pub kitchen.
Dog and child friendly and opening hours: every day from midday to 11pm, food served from midday to 2pm and 6pm to 9pm.

The Old Court House in Chulmleigh is now the only public house in the village, however it is a great one.
Dating from the 1630’s, parts going back another seven hundred years, it has earned its place as the centre of village life.
A proper local, it is patronised by the village and Sam, the landlord, will be found on one side of the bar or the other.
He in passionate about the history and is the life-force, along with Mrs Paddy, behind the success of the business.
The bar has guest ales and ciders, Sam’s Cider, obviously, among them.
Proper home cooked style, a steak and Stilton pie that is highly recommended.
Open 11am to 11pm most days (Monday Midday to 11pm) Dogs and children welcome.

The Chulmleigh Tandoori is also worth a mention,. Both licenced restaurant and takeaway the authentic Indian cuisine.
Open Monday to Sunday 5pm to 10.30 with lunchtimes bookable from 12 to 2pm

We have yet to sample the Earl so will add our findings when we do.

Passing Eggesford Station, over the railway, and towards Winkleigh is The Lymington Arms in Wembworthy, truly excellent food,
Kate is a superb cook, with generous portions.
A good selection of drinks including Teignworthy Brewery ales and obviously Sam's Cider, Winkleigh being just a few miles away it would be rude not to.
A pub that when you open the door you may find a Celtic band set up playing an ad-hoc set. A classic car meet regularly in the large car park, a bit off the beaten track, and they deserve to be successful, so please take time to pop in and see them.
Dogs, and horses are welcome, their owners, and children are mostly tolerated too.

In Winkleigh itself is Sam's Cider barn, essential for all things cider related, a shop, and a fantastic licenced café, which is also listed in our places to visit.
Open for breakfast, lunch and cream teas (don't get me started on the Devonian method of putting cream on the scone first, it's simply wrong!)
No dogs, aside guide and assistance ones, in the café but they have a large space outside with water bowls, etc, so canines are catered for.
The Tallet Café is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 3pm.
And you can stock up on cider and gifts at the same time.

There were five pubs in Winkleigh at one time, now down to two.
They are the Kings Arms, a fantastic and historical inn, food is absolutely excellent, as it would be with the Mad Butcher of Winkleigh just over the road!
A lively local atmosphere, both pubs are well supported by the locals.
Dog friendly.
Food is served:
Wednesday - Saturday - 12pm to 2:30pm then 6pm to 9pm
Sunday - 12pm to 3pm

A little further away, but worth the visit is Beaford, a little over half an hour away from us here at Ducks.
The Globe, definitely an inn to visit.
Earning a Camera award in 2022, for best pub in North Devon.
A favourite of Tina & Ceri.
Hosting a beer festival in the summer, music and quiz nights most weeks, pub games.
All in all a great atmosphere and some super ales, a pub we would definitely recommend a trip out to.
With the emphasis on local produce and low food miles the meat comes from the butcher in the village, and vegetables are from Heddens of Woodtown.
The menus change with whatever is in season, or anything special that has become available.
Opening hours:
Bar Wednesday/Thursday 5pm to 11pm
Friday/Saturday 12 noon to 11pm
Sunday 12 noon to 6pm
Food served Wednesday to Saturday evenings 6pm to 9pm

As always it is best to reserve a table for eating, but they also do a take away option.
Dogs are welcome too.

The Rams Head is another in Ceri’s Pub Club. Another CAMRA pub, they have at least two delicious local guest ales and Devon cider on tap.
Also Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone cider, which is on Ceri’s list of ciders of note, a great gin selection,
a member of their team was a professional mixologist in a previous life so we can pretty much conjure up anything you might care for.

On the Tarka Trail we highly recommend the Puffing Billy café.

In South Molton there are a few pubs/hotels that serve food, half a dozen takeaways, and several cafes.

Taste of the West Gold award winners so it goes without saying the food is great, including the Poltimore Pie, and food nights too, add in a fine selection of beers, wines and spirits, and you have the perfect place to eat and get to see the magical dark skies on Exmoor.
Their superb website is full of information, including a section on walks starting, and, more importantly, finishing, at the pub, and Steeley McQueen.
One of the few around here who open seven days a week.

We are not sure how accurate the opening times are, they do have burger and pizza vans regularly in the evenings.
If you are passing it would be worth checking out.
Special mention for the Exmoor Food Fest, which, if you have been reading from the top,
you will already know of, and be planning a trip to North Devon for next February.
you will already know of, and be planning a trip to North Devon for next February.
If you missed the text, our two closest venues are The Mitre Hotel, and La Petite Bouchée.
Most of the others are unsurprisingly on Exmoor, as far east as Taunton, and along the coast, however a few are close enough for me to add here:
Two are in Braunton/Croyde, The Kings Arms, which we recommend anyway, and New Coast Kitchen, which we have yet to try...
One in Challacombe, near Bratton Fleming, Shoulsbarrow Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast.
High on the moor, between Simonsbath and Dunkery Beacon is The Exmoor White Horse Inn.
The Bridge Inn in Dulverton.
The Swan in Bampton.

Less than seven miles away, this is one special inn, the name pub does not do it justice, this is one of very few restaurants in the area, that also serves real ale.
Holding a Michelin Star, this pub is surely one of the places you must visit during your time in North Devon.
Mark Dodson gained the Michelin Star six months after the pub was opened and retained it ever since.
Tasting menus and a three-course lunch for under £40. At lunch Wednesday – Friday, alongside our a la carte menu, we offer a three course lunch for £38.00
Lunch is served between 12 noon and 2:00pm.

The Trencherman’s Guide is a fantastic book full of some of the best places to eat locally,
not many have been listed in this area, several should be, among them the ones we have mentioned above.
However one quite nearby is Number Eight in Bideford.
Chloe and Joshua opened Number Eight on 2017 and it goes without saying local producers are to the fore, with a menu that evolves to match what ingredients are in season.
Tasting menus are recommended as dishes flow and are paired carefully and served with wine that enhances the flavours.

There are several venues in and around Exeter, and Okehampton and Dartmoor,
and one that is undoubtedly on our list of places to try is The Farmers Arms in Woolsery.
Part of the Collective at Woolsery which includes the village shop and fish & chip shop! Rescued from extinction by tech entrepreneurs Michael and Xochi Birch, and turned into an amazing gastronomic delight serving local produce, this place is a must try for us in the near future.

Further afield to us but certainly worth a trip is Tom’s in Lyme Regis.
Although unsurprisingly biased towards the sea, there are dishes with Dartmoor beef and Holsworthy pork, Exmoor lamb and vegetarian options too.
Obviously, seafood is of the finest freshness and cooked to perfection, again, menus, and the accompanying ingredients, are tailored to the catch, so a perusal of the specials is a must.
Fisherman’s Stew is high on our list of essential things to sample. A great wine menu completes a super dining experience, whether for lunch, or an evening meal, and such a warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere, people who do what they love and are passionate, and great ambassadors for family run businesses. A truly excellent restaurant.
